HARI OM
VERSE--28

Sukhatah kriyate Ramabhogah
Pascaddhanta Sarire Rogah.
Yadyapi loke Maranam saranam
Tadapi Na Muncati Papacaranam.

Sukhatah---for the sake of happiness, Kriyate---(is done) one indulges in

Ramabhogah---carnal pleasures, pascad---later on

hanta---alas sarire---in the body

Roga---disease Yadyapi---even though

Loke---inthe world Maranam---death

Saranam---the ultimate end Tadapi---even then

Na---does not Muncati---leaves

papacaranam---sinful behaviour, bhaja---seek

Govindam---Govind

Very readily one indulges in carnel pleasures;later on, alas, come deseases of the body. Even though in the world the ultimate end is death,
even then man leaves not his sinful behaviour.

HARI OM

VERSE--27

This verse is ascribed to Sumati the last of the fourteen disciples.A four fold discipline is recommended here for the seeker who wants to realize
the highest.Study of geeta- Geeta is the summery of Upanisadic truths and its practial application in every day mans life bring about a
reorientation in our intellectual out look on life, and develops the skill to keep a healthy relation to the world of happenings around us.
After understanding Geeta and its logic,he has to plough those perfections to himself. This is done by worship of the lord Lakshmi
and chanting thousand-and-one glories of lord Narayana.(Sahasranama).This helps to integrate the inner personality, lifting our
mind high above its ordinery fields of self polluting agitations.
The company of good or satsanga is always essencial to live up to our ideals.
abiding with the true conscious self is satsanga.Satsanga brings Vivaka.Vivaka brings clarity to our mind. Clarity of thoughts direct us to
do our actions in the right way. Satsanga as prayers, daily pujas, going temples, reading spiritual books, hearing docourses of learned man,
all guides us to reach the real self in us.Churning from all possible angles satsanga brings detachment. The next step seeker must do
is charity. Charity must flow from one's own abundance. We should take enough efforts to earn sufficiently in order that we may share
it with those who are in needy. We must consider the other man's requirements to be as important as our personal needs. This helps
us to live away from the suffocating selfishness and the throttling grip of my body consciousness and to live in a brotherhood bhavana
with all around us.

HARI OM

VERSE--28

This verse points out an uncoloured observation of man as he lives now in the world. There is a strain of sorrow in the very cadence of this verse.Man freely
indulges in excessive carnal pleasures and soon comes to suffer the persecutions of merciless deseases.Even when death is inherent and implicit in the
very birth and existance of the individual, man never leaves his sinful behaviour.
A sense of detachment for wordly objects is absolutely necessary for turning the mind towards self realization. he never finds time for it.
The vigorous pull and push of the vasanas called maya push us in to sin. This maya pull us away from our attempts
to live the nobler and divine virtues of spiritual living.
To live in animal instincts is no strain at all for man.It is a devolutionary process. For this no practice is necessary. To fall and slip down from
mountain is much easier than to climb across the summits to its very peak. Evolution is the result of effort and struggle, sweat and suffering.
We have to fight against our own low instincts and come to win the divine mastery over the world of objects. For this constant spiritual practice is necessary.

Hari OM

Thank you Kumarji and Sathiavathiji for your wonderful contributions.

To add on, my Learnings from Verse 27 & Verse 28:

Verse 27: In this verse, simple direct advice is given to all of us. Four Sadhanas, which will lead to liberation are highlighted in this verse.
1)Parayanam of Scriptures – Chanting of Gita, Vishnusahasranama etc
2)Dhyanam ( upasanam) – Meditation upon the Lord
3)Satsanga – Company of good people
4)Dana ( Charity) – Distribution of a percentage of our wealth in any form according to our capacity to deserving living beings.

Verse 28: Many of us are materially inclined. We think that sense pleasures are the most important thing and spend the major portion of our life to earn for the fulfillment of sense pleasures. Anyone who is successful in the area of raising and fulfilling the sense pleasures is considered successful, due to ignorance. Instead of making a yatra to a neighborhood city, a tour to Australia or Alaska is considered as a status symbol of success in life.

The amount of sense pleasures that we have at our call is considered as the symbol of our success. Instead of reveling in the ananda from Lord Rama, who is a source of joy for Jnanis , we revel in the fleeting sense pleasures. When we receive Joy from the Lord, it is real, permanent and everlasting. When the joy arises from any other thing, it leads to negative consequences such as addiction, over indulgence and diseases etc.

Many of us think that life, especially in the youth stage, is meant for sensual enjoyment. We tend to keep on acquiring and claiming ownership of things of creation. Actually we cannot claim ownership for anything. The worldly things including house, body etc are temporary gift from Lord for our spiritual sadhana. We are supposed to use them and part with them with gratitude. Death ends all our ownership. Even though death is going to snatch away all things that we think we own, still we go on running around to own more and more, at times even compromising dharmic values. Every scam is the result of deluded thinking of human mind. This verse highlights such delusions so that we become intelligent enough towards right living.

HARI OM

VERSE--29

In this verse Acharya is remembering the dangers of wasting one's entire life under the fasinstion for wealth.Too much importance to money is thoughtlessness.
It will breed lovelessness, hatred and a thousand sub human impulses in the money mad people.More wealth brings more jealousies, conceits, suspicions
and unhappy fears.Even one's own son becomes a sourse of fear for the unholy man of riches. Therefore, acharya says wealth is not welfare.wealth is anartham.
One should always keep in one corner of mind that money or wealth is only a means not an end in itself.Have it in sufficient measure to use it.When we possess
money, wealth is a blessing. When you allow money to possess you, wealth is a curse and it will give you not even a suspicion of comfort(sukha lesah).
This is the truth about wealth. This is the way of wealth. So,one should take enough time to turn the mind towards the realisation of the self and to realise
the inner kingdom of joy.

HARI OM

VERSE--30
Acharya advises the seeker that once you have withdrawn your mind from the world of objects, you should learn to control all the subjective activities with in your
personality by practicing inner exercises.(antharanga sadhana). A path in five stages was drawn up here.
1--pranayama. This stands for the five physiological systems of activity.1--prana- perception and reception of things in to subjective life.2--Apana-rejection of things and responces.3--vyana- digestive system 4--samana-the circulatory system.5--udana-the capacity to lift ourselves from our present state of understanding to a nobler and better peak of thought on the mount of knowledge. The control of these expressions are called pranayama. This is a system of very regulated exercises of breathing. This can be achieved through sustained and sincere practice of worship, study of scriptures, and selfless service to society.
2-Pratyahara--The capacity to turn back our mind in to the self from the world of sese object is pratyahara.
3-vivaka--our intellect is to be re-educated to hold enduring and healthy values of life. This can be done by nitya and anitya vivaka vichara. The discrimination between the impermanent and eternal, the immutable truth.
4--Japa-is done to develop our discriminative power of intellect to distinguish the real from the unreal. One gains a dexterity in withdrawing his mind from the unreal.
5--Samadhi-As a cumilative effect of all these one is reaching a state of utter silence with in --a state of relative thoughtlessness.
These various displines at the mentel intellectual and physical levels are to be undertaken without hurry. Each takes its own time to grow and emerge out.
Haste is waste on the path of truth. This warning is so beautifully given here when acharya advises so lovingly "please perform with care --with great care".

Hari OM

Learning and reflections from V29-31.

Verse 29
In the verse, Adi Sankara is dealing with the delusion with respect to wealth. We often think that money is the cause of happiness. However, money often becomes a source of unhappiness, distrust and pain. I a rich man’s family, when he becomes old, the children start talking about dividing his wealth and quarrel with each other.
Money should be used for noble work that will give chita sudhi, punyam and Jnanam. By this way, money can give happiness. Directly, it cannot contribute to permanent happiness. We need to understand the role of money in our life properly and should give right value to it. If Mother Lakshmi comes alone to our home without Lord Narayana ( Dharma, Jnanam), she can create havoc.

Verse 30
The various inner exercises are discussed in this verse
1 Pranayama – This exercise simultaneously improves the physical and mental health. This is a unique two in one sadhana.
2 Pratyahara – Mastery of senses. We need to avoid addiction and dependence on finite sense objects. It is risky since they are insecure and impermanent. If we depend on insecure things, we will increase our insecurity and there will be constant strain.
3 Enquiry – Nitya anitya vastu vivekam – What is the goal of life, is it fulfilling sense pleasures or increasing the false ownerships?. Constant discrimination of what is available for me to permanently own and not get trapped in anitya vastus is the sadhana advised.
4 Japa – purifying discipline with a mantra which leads to absorption
5 Samadhi – Absorption in the mantra.
One need to be alert, committed to the above sadhanas with great dedication and hasten slowly in a natural manner.

Verse 31
Two important things are highlighted in this verse.
1 Necessity of a Guru to guide us through spiritual pursuits – To identify an address in a large colony, we ask for directions. In the vast infinite world, in a short given time with lots of obstacles, we need a teacher to direct us in our spiritual pursuits. Otherwise it will be like searching a needle in bundle of haystacks. We need to receive his teachings with great devotion and shradha.
2 To be fit and qualified to receive the teachings – through discipline of sense organs and mind. We need to keep our body mind sense complex fit to discover the truth which is the very core of us.
Atman, Truth, Satyam is what we are as witness consciousness. Whatever we chase in life such as immortality and fulfillment are with us already. We don’t have to go to the world with a begging bowl for love and fulfillment. We can give them to the world as we have them in abundance. Our emotional dependence on the world is not a necessity. Self management and guidance from Guru will lead us to the freedom from emotional dependence.
