Verse 32
Answering to questions raised Lord now reveals his real nature to Arjuana who was perplexed to see the ugra roopa of lord destroying the world -
“ I am the mighty time now engaged in destroying the worlds”. This attitude of destruction is also one aspect of compassion of the lord because destruction means change and this alone in turnleads to creation and maintenance.
“None of warriors of kaurava army are going to survive even if you do not want to fight – their fate is already decided by me as kaala “. The avathara rahasya of lord is to wipe out beings who are degenerated in their dharmic values and lead a purposeless life away from the truth.through these words lord has already conveyed victory of pandavas

Verse 33,34
Lord continues- “ Arjuna I have shown this not to frighten you but to give comfort that you are going to win. Therefore arjuna you fight , conquer the enemies and enjoy the prosperous kingdom .
Great warriors bhisma, drone, karna - all these people have been already killed by me. You are only a mere instrument, I as kaala have already finished all actions ,you have to just act -. just send your arrows and relax - your work is done. i have conferred success and glory already.
This is a message to each one of us – we always arrogate all our achievements and success to us and forget the role of lord . we have only to surrender unto lord and act in this world. Lord has already finished everything for us and we have to just move forward in the path shown by him

Verse 35
Sanjaya who is blessed to see the viswaroopa of lord now reports reactions of Arjuna to Dritharastra. Sanjaya was anxious to convey to the blind king the fate of his sons in the war. He wants to try his level best to stop this war and he knows except the blind king nobody can prevent the impending war .accordingly Sanjaya addresses Arjuna as kireetee - the crowned one –details the condition of Arjuna to the king - “ the great warrior Arjuna is trembling and prostrating and bowing down again and again overwhelmed with fear is offering prayers unto lord.

Verse 36
Arjna offers prayer in praise of the lord
“ oh lord Rishikesa -( lord of senses) by your grace everything in this cosmos is in order . everyone delights and and rejoices in praising you.
Rakshsas are freightened and they are running here and there and the wise people are reveling in your worship
This universal prayer is indicative of the deeper vision arjuna has developed

Verse 37
Why lord is worthy to be worshipped by all is explained in this verse. Lord is
- the supreme cause even of the creator.he is the primal cause which is all pervasive and support of the entire universe.
- infinite illumining everything in the entire cosmos
- imperishable – nothing can destroy him
- beyond sat- the entire manifested world of names and forms , asat- unmanifested and is the essential truth behind both sat and asat.
-He is the pure consciousness

Sloka35:
Sanjaya says the following to Dhritirashtra in the hopes that Dhritirashtra might stop the war.

Arjuna the crowned one joined his hands and prostrated before Lord Krishna after hearing Krishna's speech. Arjuna spoke with a choked voice, trembling and overcome by fear.
Having described the end of all the mighty Kaurava warriors and the fearful mental state of Arjuna after seeing his friend Sri Krishna in the cosmic form, Sanjaya thought Dhritirashtra would put an end to the war. Sadly though, Dhrtirashtra blinded by the love he had for his children could not believe / see that great doom awaited them. He did not act on this on last chance that he was given.

Sloka36:
Arjuna speaks the following in praise of the the Vishwaroopa / Universal form.
Arjuna is beginning to understand the inner meaning / true significance of the universal-cosmic form.
The world is in joyful rapture praising The Lord of senses (Hrisikesa) ; and the natural progression of this is that the bad and negative forces are running in all directions due to great fear. The good bow down with great reverence to The Lord. This is to be expected and most appropriate.

Sloka37:
The reason for everybody bowing down is then explained.
He who is the supreme soul, the creator of even Brahma, the cause for everything, infinite in every way, The Lord of the lords, the place where the universe exists, the imperishable one, the one who is both the manifested and un manifested and beyond that also as pure consciousness itself.

Sloka 38:
He is the first and foremost god and is most ancient as he is the creator of everything, he is the refuge of the entire universe which includes physical world of objects , emotions and perceptions and everything that we experience with our senses, mind and intellect. He is the substratum of the entire universe , pervading everything.
He is the one who is aware of every single thing that transpires in hit his universe, hence the knower. He is that knowledge that we should seek to realize the Self. This is something we need to learn or acquire the knowledge of hence he is knowable.

Hari OM

Arjuna goes through various phases as he sees the universal form. The first response is one of wonder only. Arjuna sees all beings in the cosmic body of the Lord. The Sun and the Moon are like his eyes. He sees the hands , legs etc of the people as those of the Lord. The Lord's body with thousands of hands, legs etc appears without beginning, middle or end. Then Arjuna's attention is turned towards the mouth of the Lord which represents Time(Death). With blazing fire and protruding teeth, the Lord's mouth evokes terror in all, including Arjuna, Arjuna sees the entire world being scorched by this fire of time, while many are rushing towards the mouth the Lord. Some are already inside the mouth and some are crushed between the teeth. All these cause great fear and confusion in Arjuna and he begins to doubt whether the Lord is a loving father or a terrible destroyer. This shows that Arjuna is still not able to see the Lord as a whole. He is able to accept birth as part of the universe , but not death. This partial outlook is the cause of fear and confusion, which is the second phase of response. Then the Lord clarifies that the fierce aspect also is Himself, manifesting as Time -principle. When the time comes for people to die, the Lord finds instruments to bring this about and Arjuna happens to e one of them in the hands of the Lord.

Slokas 35,36
Merciful Bhagavan, demons are running away in all directions, seeing Your terrible form. Nothing can save them except Your grace. Instead of fleeing away from, if they bow to You in faith and devotion, they may obtain Your grace and be saved. The good and the righteous are worshipping You and singing Your glory in order to please You. The sages and accomplished Yogis are supremely satisfied; they are neither running away nor rushing towards You, but are unconcerned. Each group of men is viewing You in their nature and behaving accordingly towards You.

Sloka 37
Now, I understand why demons are running away. Just as light banishes darkness, and knowledge destroys ignorance, these demons existing only in the dark corners of ignorance, run away from Your presence. When all the demons are explode, all the veils of ignorance are burnt to ashes, what remains is the pure Atma, who experiences oneness with you and therefore bows to you in reverence. This is the reason the sages and the realized Yogis are bowing to You.
You cannot me measured in terms of Truth or untruth, or in terms of opposites, yet You are beyond all.

Sloka 38
Since You are the source of the unmanifest, and the Creator of Brahma, who created the Gods and the manifest universe, You are the Supreme Lord. As energy pervades the entire physical universe and akasa pervades energy, You pervade akasa. Therefore if You are known everything is known, but if everything else is known, it is equivalent to knowing nothing at all if You are not known. Therefore You are the ultimate knowledge.

Sloka 32
The Lord said — Kala (Time) is the calculator which calculates (Kalayati). Calculating the end of the lives of all those under the leadership of Dhrtarastra’s sons, I am causing their destruction. Fully manifesting Myself with this fierce form, I have begun to destroy the hosts of kings. Therefore, by My will, even without you, namely, even without your effort, all these hostile warriors under the leadership of Dhrtarastra’s sons, shall cease to be, i.e., will be destroyed.

Sloka 33
Therefore, arise for fighting against them. Conquering your enemies, win glory and enjoy a prosperous and righteous kingdom. All those who have sinned have been already annihilated by Me. Be you merely an instrument (Nimitta) of Mine in destroying them — just like a weapon in my hand, O Savyasacin! The root ‘Sac’ means ‘fastening’. A ‘savyasacin’ is one who is capable of fixing or fastening the arrow even with his left hand. The meaning is that he is so dexterous that he can fight with a bow in each hand.

Sloka 34
Every plan is made by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but He is so kind and merciful to His devotees that He wants to give the credit to His devotees who carry out His plan according to His desire. Life should therefore move in such a way that everyone acts in Krishna consciousness and understands the Supreme Personality of Godhead through the medium of a spiritual master. The plans of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are understood by His mercy, and the plans of the devotees are as good as His plans. One should follow such plans and be victorious in the struggle for existence.

Sloka 35
Sanjaya said — Having heard the speech of Krsna, ocean of affection for the seekers of refuge in Him, Arjuna did obeisance to Him. Trembling with fear, he bowed again and again before Him. With folded palms, and trembling, Arjuna spoke in a choked voice with emotion.

Sloka 36
Arjuna, after hearing from Krishna about the outcome of the Battle of Kurukshetra, became enlightened, and as a great devotee and friend of the Supreme Personality of Godhead he said that everything done by Krishna is quite fit. Arjuna confirmed that Krishna is the maintainer and the object of worship for the devotees and the destroyer of the undesirables. His actions are equally good for all. Arjuna understood herein that when the Battle of Kurukshetra was being concluded, in outer space there were present many demigods, siddhas, and the intelligentsia of the higher planets, and they were observing the fight because Krishna was present there. When Arjuna saw the universal form of the Lord, the demigods took pleasure in it, but others, who were demons and atheists, could not stand it when the Lord was praised. Out of their natural fear of the devastating form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, they fled. Krishna’s treatment of the devotees and the atheists is praised by Arjuna. In all cases a devotee glorifies the Lord because he knows that whatever He does is good for all.

Sloka 37
Here it is explained why it is appropriate to propitiate the Supreme Lord Krishna. As He is purna or complete He is known as the source of all atmas or souls. Here He is addressed as mahatma the greatest personality. The word atma has been explained in Mahabharta in this manner: The Supreme Lord is pervading everywhere in everything, because He is the controller of all, the dispenser of the results of all actions, abiding in each and every body and the first recipient of all sense enjoyments and because He is eternal He is known as atma the soul of all. The Bhagavat Purana states that the material worlds are a combination of sat or effect and asat or cause but the Supreme Lord is superior to both sat and asat.

Sloka 38

The Supreme Lord Krishna is prime cause of all causes. The most ancient of all. The origin of all the demigods and every other kind of god. The ultimate refuge of creation and all universes because He is the visvarupa the divine universal form. He is the knower of everything and the goal of everything knowable. He is the highest abode known as the spiritual realms of Vaikuntha and He is beyond that. The whole manifest and unmanifest creation is pervaded by Him. Because of all these things Lord Krishna deserves glorification and salutations from everyone in all creation.

HARI OM
Verse-31
Till now Arjuna thought Sri Krishna was the cowherd boy and Lord of the Gopikas of Vrindavan. Having seen the divine form of the Lord he realises the sanctity and the divinity of the Lord's power. He surrenders himself at the very feet of the Lord requesting him to tell him who He was and he wants to know the outcome of the war. He wants to know what is the mission of the Lord in taking such a terrible form and how the Kaurava frorces are marching in all hurry towards the burning mouth of death. He expects his victory in the war but, Arjuna wants to get the confirmation of the same from Krishna himself. So, he asks this question.

Verse-32
Introducing Himself as the manifestation of truth in its aspects of destruction the Lord in the divine form now declares that the world is created by a continuous process of destruction.
Childhood dies before youth appears. Old age takes birth when youth passes away.Today has risen from the graves of yesterday. The very purpose behind this manifestation is to destroy totally all the negetive forces that strangle the cultural life of the country and Lord confirms his chances of victory. In the process of reconst ruction, the Lord is not depending upon any individuals. It is the time that is going to bring the renissence and achieve the revival. Individuals are mere creatures of destiny. In spite of them, with or withoput their co-operation times plan will be worked out.

Verse-33
In this verse Lord Krishna is very directly consoling Arjuna that he should stand up and catch the time and claim success and glory. What ever be the might and strength of the negetive forces, the all consuming Might of change has already destroyed them all, and Arjuna has only to come forward , act the part of a hero and claim the crown of victory all to himself.

Verse-34
In this verse Arjuna is advised to perform fearless action in life and fight the war. Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna, and other brave warriors were all the top men in Kaurava forces.
Arjuna had certain reasons why he should be perticularly afraid of them. Lord says how they are all taken up one by one and the Lord indicates how even they have already been killed by the all consuming time spirit and there by the field is clear for Arjuna to play his part and advance towards the throne and crown and claim the entire glory as his own.

Sloka 39:

Arjuna now salutes Bhagawan a thousand times and more, and also proclaims that Bhagawan is Vayu, Agni, Yama, Varuna ,prajapathi , the moon and the great grand father of all. These deities are all nothing but the various facets of Bhagawan himself.

Sloka:40

Now Arjuna salutes Bhagawan in all directions. Before and behind Bhagawan. He also praises The Lord once again as the one who possesses infinite power , and the one who exists everywhere . In other words Bhagawan is everything.

Sloka: 41&42

Realizing that Sri Krishna ( his friend the cowherd) is the immeasurable supreme being, Arjuna seeks Bhagawan's forgiveness for all the words he has uttered with disrespect, or for fun , or out of love for his friend or In a very casual way during their day to day encounters. All though it was done inadvertently , Arjuna feels embarrassed and scared now that he knows the true identity of his friend Sri Krishna.

Verse 39
Arjuna now glorifies lord who is bestower of the power for the deities. As pointed out in the Vedas these deities are the means and goal is the lord .Lord alone expresses as vayu, yama, agni, varuna and the moon.arjuna is now convinced that lord in the heart of one is the lord of all. He was offering prostrations continuously to express his reverence .

VERSE 40
Arjuna continues his prayer- Oh lord Salutations to you from all sides from front, from back - you pervade everything in the cosmos.you are infinite in power, prowess . you are everything - “all”
Lord resides everywhere –there is no place where he is not.he is the pure existence dwelling everywhere in all beings .in addition he is the infinite potential from where one get the incentive to act.
Verse 41 ,42
Now arjuna seeks forgiveness from lord - so far he considered lord only as an ordinary human and was addressing him as friend or calling him Krishna or yadava. Arjuna after seeing the viswaroopa now regrets for being disrespectful
Arjuna remembers some of the intimate moments he had shared with lord Krishna and he really feels embarrassed to note how careless and disrespectful he was.He asks lord to forgive him.what else can one do when one understands the immense glory of a person with whom one was dealing casually.

Slokas 43-46

Arjuna glorifies the Lord by saying that the Lord is the Father of this moving and unmoving world and therefore is greatly adored by all. There is no one equal to Him, in glory. might or power, he is the greatest Guru. There can be none equal to the Lord, as the Creator can only be one.
That being the case, I still considered you as an ordinary mortal and played and jested with You. Therefore Arjuna says please once again forgive me- as a father would forgive his son, a friend his friend and a lover would forgive his beloved.
I am delighted to see this form, yet my mind is filled with fear. Therefore show me only your previous form - the crowned One with a discus in hand having four arms.
Pujya Gurudev gives deep insight into what this means in his commentaries in Sloka 45, 46.

Slokas 43&44

Arjuna seeks forgiveness by addressing The Lord as father of movable and immovable objects. Once again he praises Bhagawan as the supreme most guru and all powerful being.
He then prostrates to Bhagawan , surrendering, seeking his forgiveness and grace. He sights examples of how a father bears with his sons actions, like wise a friend his friend's actions and a lover his beloved's actions.

Slokas 45&46:

Arjuna is no doubt ecstatic at seeing Bhagawan in the cosmic form, but is also fearful of this experience. He implores Bhagawan to revert back to his original form or rather what Arjuna is used to seeing.
Arjuna then describes the form in which he wishes to see Bhagawan in. Bhagawan adorned with a crown, holding the mace and chakra , in his four arms .

Verse 43,44
Arjuna continues glorifying lord- “ you are father of this world and you are the only one worthy to be adored. There is none equal to you – you are the greatest guru. You are the eternal truth illumining the gross subtle and causal bodies and the single illumining factor of this cosmos ‘.
Arjuna now pleads lord to forgive him for any disrespect or mistakes committed by him knowingly or unknowingly. He is sure lord will forgive him just as a father will pardon his son , a person - his friend and lover his beloved.

Verse 45
Arjuna who has seen the universal form was delighted and was astonished to see the form divine .But this experience was new and his intellectual stamina was not enoug h to revel in the still moment of the unique vision and he was frightened .He requests lord to come back to the previous form .

Slokas 47-49

Bhagavan says that by the grace of the Lord alone Arjuna was able to see the Virat form. The Virat form is nothing but a vision that one can get to see when the mind is very pure and able to see the Oneness of the Cosmic Universe. Arjuna was not at that stage as we see before the Lord started to give the discourse. And yet, without attaining this perfection of Oneness vision the Lord granted him this vision. Hence the Lord says it was because of his grace.

Also neither by mere study of Vedas, or by dana or tapas can one see this Vision. These are the means to purify our mind when done without the ego (as karma yoga) , but they are not the end. Liberation is the end, hence the purifying process can only be the means. This does not mean that study of Vedas or other things should not be pursued. That will be suicidal. The Lord only says don't mistake them to be the goal.

The Lord reiterates to Arjuna not to be baffled by this Virat Roop. He calms him down thus, and shows back the form that Arjuna wished to see. As Gurudev mentions this is to re-iterate the fact the Truth behind the Microcosm is nothing but the Truth behind the Macrocosm. The wave though different in size, shape and form is nothing but the ocean.
