Hari Om. Pranam to all.

Just remembered " dhyayto vishaynpusa: ", so the first sentence could be

Devotees think ( about God ).

Hari Om. Pranams.

Thanks Umaji. You got them all.

The correct answers -

भक्ताः ध्यायन्ति - Devotees meditate
शिष्यः नमति - A pupil salutes
बालः पठति - A boy reads
गङ्गा वहति - Ganga flows
सा हसति - She laughs

*** Thing to note - when there is plural the verb has "nti" in the end (like ध्यायन्ति) and when there is singular verb has "ti" in the end (like पठति)

Dear Umaji,
Hari Om. Pranams.

It is very apt that you remembered 'dhyayto vishaynpusa' . When our thoughts are bent on something and we are dwelling on it, that is same as meditating, so... literally we meditate on sense objects instead of meditating on Self/God :o

Hari OM. Pranams.

Thanks Meera ji for a nice quiz. Here is my attempt.

देशरक्षा नराणां प्रथमं कर्तव्यं

देशरक्षा - Protection of nation
नराणां - नर: is man. नराणां is 6th case (meaning 'whose' ) of 'plural of नर:' (men, people) so it loosely means "people's"

प्रथमं - First
कर्तव्यं - Duty

"Protection of the nation is people's first duty."

Hari Om. Pranams.

अहं प्रयत्नं करोमि -

गीतायाम् प्रथमे अध्याये कति श्लोकाः

गीता Gita - Bhagvad Gita
प्रथम Pratham - First
अध्याय: Adhyay - Chapter
कति Kati - How many
श्लोकाः Shlokah - verses

गीता शब्दः लता सदृशः अस्ति
गीता शब्दस्य सप्तमी विभक्ति (7th case) गीतायाम् अस्ति। Gitayam - In Gita
प्रथमः शब्दस्य सप्तमी विभक्ति (7th case) प्रथमे अस्ति। Prathame - In first
अध्यायः शब्दस्य सप्तमी विभक्ति (7th case) अध्याये अस्ति। Adhyaye - In Chapter

भाषान्तर Translation: In Gita first chapter, how many verses (are there)?

Answer in Sanskrit:

गीतायाम् प्रथमे अध्याये सप्तचत्वारिंशत् (47) श्लोकाः सन्ति | ( सन्ति because श्लोकाः is plural)

अहम् अति तुष्यामी !

You may try to answer on these lines: अर्जुनविषदयोगो नाम्नः प्रथमे अध्याये सप्तचत्वारिंशत् (४७) श्लोकाः सन्ति।

In that way kindly write: चतुर्थे अध्याये कति श्लोकाः

Hari Om. Pranam.

On second thoughts, I could have used "kanya" instead of putree, "jamat" instead of putrya: pati:, "bandhu:" instead of sahodar: and "bhagini" instead of sahodaree.

Not aware what is the name for putrasya bharya...daughter in law.

हरी ॐ उमा!
शुभाशयाः !
उत्तम प्रयास!

(ok now somebody correct my words!
Original intention: Greetings! Excellent attempt! :)

पुत्रस्य भार्या = स्नुषा

मम पुत्र्या: पति: = मम जामाता
मम सहोदर: - I am wondering if sahodar is more sibling? मम भ्राता

मम सहोदरस्य भार्या = मम प्रजावती

Since I am wondering about the word Sahodar, I will leave with you another word for sister: स्वसा

Many thanks...!

Now answer this (and pls check my grammar which is hopeless...

ततः कति जनाः सन्ति भवतः अस्मिन गृहे ?

Hari Om. Pranams.

I have checked all the answers below in Sanskrit book. In Gita Chapter 1 there was a big list of all relatives gathered on the battle ground of kurukshetra. Some of these words are used there.

wife - भार्या / जाया
son - पुत्रः
daughter-in-law - स्नुषा
daughter - पुत्री
son-in-law - जामाता (has come from जामातृ )
brother - सहोदरः
sister-in-law - भ्रातृजाया
sister - सहोदरी/स्वसा
father - जनकः/पिता (has come from पितृ)
mother - जननी/माता (has come from मातृ)
paternal grandfather - पितामहः
paternal grandmother -पितामही
maternal grandfather - मातामहः
maternal grandmother -मातामही

------------------------------------------
Also presenting some other words that are related to family (some given in Sanskrit book and some I looked up in dictionary).

Maternal Uncle -मातुल
Paternal Uncle - पितृव्यः
Husband - पति:
Father-in-law -श्वशुरः
Grand son -पौत्रः
Friend -मित्रम् /स्नेहितः (Note: मित्रम् is in neuter gender. The word मित्रः masculine gender means Sun)
Maternal Aunt -मातुलानी
Paternal Aunt - पितृव्या
Mother-in-law -श्वश्रूः
A wife's brother, brother-in-law - श्यालः

Meeraji, is there any way you can find out when Smt. Shailaja ji will return? It will be so nice when we have some guidance since all of us are learning.

Also, please give exact question from a Sanskrit book and its exact answer (without adding/changing /creating a new question). I know it is wonderful to experiment because we learn and we will definitely do that when Shaliaja ji returns so she can correct us. Till then sticking to the book seems like our best strategy because we can't correct each other.

Hari Om,

Sorry Padmaja I do not have Sulabha Samskritam. The questions I asked are from a Mission book called learn sanskrit in 10 days. All word meanings are in that book. (I don't know sanskrit btw... :)
The only change I made was instead of asking how many people are there in your house, I said, "Therefore how many people are there in this house?'

Shailaja amma is returning tomorrow. Just asked.
Good idea to drop this till Shaliaja amma comes.

Lord has given me another noble task which needs my immediate attention, so I won't be able to participate in the CIF discussion forum going forward for indefinite time...

I wish all the best to everyone and thanks for all your love and knowledge that you gave to me.
